Understanding Cohort Retention
What is a Cohort Retention Analysis?
A cohort is a group of users who share a common characteristic, most often the date they signed up (e.g., all users who joined in January). A cohort retention analysis tracks these groups over time to see what percentage of them remain active customers in the following weeks or months. It is one of the most powerful ways to understand customer loyalty and whether your product is getting “stickier” over time.
How to Read the Retention Table
- Rows: Each row represents a different cohort (e.g., January users, February users).
- Columns: Each column represents a period of time since the cohort was acquired (e.g., Month 1, Month 2).
- Percentages: The cells show the percentage of the original cohort that was still active during that period.
- Color Intensity: Higher percentages (better retention) are typically shown in a darker color, making it easy to spot trends at a glance.
