Understanding Click-To-Open Rate (CTOR)

What is CTOR?

Click-To-Open Rate (CTOR) is the percentage of unique recipients who clicked a link within your email, out of the total who opened it. Unlike a standard Click-Through Rate (CTR) which is based on total delivered emails, CTOR focuses specifically on the engagement of the audience that has already opened your message. This makes it a much better indicator of your email’s content quality, design, and the effectiveness of your call-to-action.

How to Calculate CTOR

The formula for calculating Click-To-Open Rate is:

CTOR = (Number of Unique Clicks / Number of Unique Opens) x 100

This calculator handles the math for you, giving you an immediate sense of how engaging your email’s content truly is.

Why is CTOR a Better Metric than CTR?

While both metrics are useful, CTOR gives you a more honest assessment of your email’s performance. Here’s why:

  • It Isolates Content Performance: Your Open Rate is a measure of your subject line. Your CTOR is a measure of everything inside the email—the copy, the images, the layout, and the offer. A high CTOR means your content is compelling.
  • It’s Not Diluted by Opens: A campaign could have a low Open Rate but a very high CTOR. This would tell you that your subject line needs work, but the content is perfect for the people who do open it. A standard CTR wouldn’t reveal this insight.
  • It’s Action-Oriented: CTOR helps you answer the question: “Once someone opens my email, am I convincing them to take the next step?”

Industry benchmarks for CTOR often fall between 20% and 30%. A higher CTOR is a strong sign of a highly engaged audience and effective content.
